PFL Debutants Manila Digger FC spoiled Philippine Army FC’s return to top-flight football in the Philippines Football League 2024 opening match.
In the first-ever match between the two clubs, it was Digger who saw themselves get away with 3 points while Army marked their return from professional league football after last appearing in 2015.
Japeth Piñero opened the scoring of the season in the 21st minute, converting from a through ball from midfielder Ashley Flores for the first professional goal and assist by Manila Digger FC.
Former Kaya FC-Iloilo veteran Eric Giganto doubled Digger’s lead in the 39th minute after youngster Piñero finds him one-on-one against Army’s goalkeeper.
Philippine Army FC ended the first half by pulling one back through a set-piece in the 42nd minute. Captain Ricardo Becite delivered an indirect free kick to John Robert Solen who put the ball in the back of the net.
The second half started with John Celiz leveling the score for the Troopers at 2-2 after super-sub Ryan Decena found him with a long assist in the 50th minute.
Japanese midfielder Daiki Jahana restored Digger’s lead in the 62nd minute through a flick in the opponent’s penalty box which proved to be the game-winner for the debutant club. Digger 3, Army 2.
