Stallion Laguna FC coach Ernie Nierras wears many hats. On top of his head coaching duties, Nierras is also engineer.
And as the COVID-19 pandemic suspended football activities, Nierras made good use of his time and knowledge by developing reusable anti-viral mask together with son, Matthew.
“I am a very optimistic person,” said Nierras. “Regardless of the challenges we face, I will always try to solve problems.”
Masks are a minimum health requirement as the world deals with the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I’m very proud of the design we came up with, knowing the limitations and challenges we faced because of the pandemic,” Nierras added.
The mask Nierras developed will benefit the physical demands of athletes, particularly football players. Additionally he has also been developing a contact tracing tool which will also monitor the health of all the players.
It doesn’t come as a surprise that Nierras has come up with innovations as his coaching career has also been marked with impressive achievements that included leading Stallion to the 2012 UFL Cup and 2013 UFL League title.
The passion projects have not taken Nierras’ focus away from Stallion’s important mission in the Philippines Football League brought to you by Qatar Airways.
Stallion stepped up its buildup in the last three weeks in anticipation for the start of the season under strict health and safety protocols.
In fact, Nierras set lofty goals for his squad even as he vowed that the club will continue to push opponents to the limit.
“You know Stallion will always do our best and try to win all out matches,” said Nierras.
“Regardless of the result I don’t think any team will say Stallion is an easy team to play against. We also show respect to all our opponents by making sure we play each game well prepared.”
Having finished third behind Ceres Negros and Kaya Iloilo last season, Nierras feels the club is ripe to finally punch its ticket to the AFC Cup.
“Hopefully the shoe will be on the other foot next year, and we get a chance to represent the PFL in AFC competitions. It won’t be easy as always, but with a new season comes new opportunities and hope,” he added.
