Powerhouse United City and Kaya-Iloilo gun for their second straight wins while two more squads make their debut on Saturday as action resumes in the 2020 Philippines Football League at the PFF national training center pitch in Carmona, Cavite.
Fresh from similar 1-0 triumphs last Wednesday, UCFC takes on debuting Mendiola 1991 FC at 4:30 p.m. while Kaya-Iloilo FC winds up the triple bill against the Azkals Development Team at 8 p.m.
Stallion-Laguna FC also also makes its debut, kicking off its campaign against Maharlika-Manila FC at 9 a.m. in the single-round series sanctioned by the Philippine Football Federation and supported by the Games and Amusements Board.
United will be without Manny Ott who will serve a suspension following his red card against ADT. While Ott leaves a void at central midfield, UCFC coach Frank Muescan believes the squad has enough depth to cope with his absence.
“We have players who can step up in Manu’s absence,” said Muescan, who has the likes of Jorrel Aristorenas, Arnie Pasinabo and Pocholo Bugas in his squad.
Mendiola captain Jim Ashley Flores admitted they are in for a tough challenge against UCFC, whose core is made up of the Ceres team that captured a third straight crown last year. But the former San Beda star also believes the squad can pull a surprise with its counter-attacking style.
“We’re here to prove that counter-attacking football is effective,” said Flores.
Scoring more goals will also be on the top of Kaya Iloilo FC coach Yu Yoshide’s mind after his squad spurned numerous chances in the second half against Maharlika Manila FC.
The ADT however showed it can be tough to break down, although coach Scott Cooper expects improvements with intensity and the way his players press the ball.
Stallion will bank on veterans Balot Doctora and Jess Melliza against a Maharlika side that will miss midfielder Serge Kaole, who suffered an ankle injury in the first half against Kaya
